Jennifer Mooney has spent the majority of her career in the communications business. She served as an executive in the media business – specifically cable TV – during the media revolution as the industry deployed phone service, high speed data and more than 300 fully interactive channels and mobile. The early days gave her a glimpse into how consumers use technology and consume information, and she viscerally understands that we all devour content on our own terms.

In recent years, she has served clients that include financial services, philanthropy, health care, technology, telecommunications, food, hospitality, retail, entertainment, law and consumer-facing interests. Her expertise includes, communications, thought leadership, change management, public affairs, media, community engagement and reputation management.

As the mother of two “nearly” grown girls and step-grandma to two little boys, her thinking spans several generations. She considers herself a fashionista, hack-geologist, quasi psychologist, girlfriend and communicator. She’s an active outdoorswoman who has even scaled major peaks, crossed treacherous waters and ridden on challenging trails.

With her thesis entitled “Soul, purpose and meaning in individuals and organizations,” she believes that none of us should squander our time. She blogs for several national publications, including themooneygroup.net, advertisingweek.com and simply-communicate.com, teaches courses and has won several awards.

During a recent neighborhood run, my mind was racing faster than my feet (as is usually the case). My thoughts turned to one of my favorite marketing reads, All Marketers Tell Stories, by Seth Godin. I was thinking about an upcoming meeting and I thought about the story that needs to be shared. It is an organization with amazing talent that needs to look inward and ignite a common passion. That story of passion can not only boost internal morale, but also then be shared broadly with external audiences and successfully help fuel business growth.

Compelling stories don’t need to be “sold” but rather need to be “told.” By their very nature, creative story telling sells itself. Rather than 60 PowerPoint slides, a visual representation can connect with the audience in ways that mirror their real life and therefore they immediately embrace. Everyone is part of a story, and that story that is always larger than them, yet they crave messages personalized for them. Whether someone works for an agency, a retailer, a hospital or is employed full-time at home (one of the most difficult careers on the planet!), we all interact with people at work, at home and at play, and we look for ways to connect our story to theirs. We are also all customers (or potential customers), and social sites like Facebook and LinkedIn remind us how much more closely connected we are to each other’s stories than we may even realize.

So the next time you’re preparing for an important meeting, consider that you may not need another PowerPoint deck! Just make sure you have a story that is worth sharing and offers the solution someone is anxiously waiting to hear. How comfortable are you at telling, rather than selling, compelling stories?

Everyone expects an Executive Creative Director to be brilliant. To see things that others just don’t see. To shape and mold good work into great work. Jeff Warman does all of those expected things. What’s maybe not so expected is for an Executive Creative Director to be warm and engaging, to genuinely care about the people who work for him and to put his own creative ego aside. Jeff does all of those not so expected things, too. But, what’s REALLY unexpected (drum roll, please) is for an Executive Creative Director to actually listen to clients’ concerns and perspective about the work. That’s the Jeff Warman trifecta. Now, he may not always agree with you and he’ll tell you when he doesn’t, but he’ll never be a jerk about it. And that’s what’s really cool about Warman.

As Executive Creative Director, he leads the ideation team to deliver singular creative ideas that move on to become the driving force behind integrated, media-neutral campaigns. Warman’s work for clients like Long John Silver’s, Brown-Forman, Mentos Candy, Kentucky Lottery and the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation has won a long list of national and international awards. Adweek praised his work as having a “certain weird genius” and Cincinnati Magazine dubbed him the poster boy for a new generation of outstanding creative talent. But work’s not his only creative outlet – he recently completed his first screenplay, which is in its initial production phase.
